#160: "Give Me Your Wallet..."
Tuesday’s Caption Committee mtg was a doozy. First things first, tho: Artie’s girlfriend, Syd, was at Rock Box for karaoke night on Sat and she picked up the wrong purse on the way out. She’d just done a bring-the-house-down version of ‘I Will Survive’ with a total stranger. By the end of it, they were exchanging texts of the incriminating video and all kinds of emojis. On the way out, Syd picked up the wrong purse, despite not having brought a purse of her own (there were drinks involved). Turns out, it was her new bff’s purse. Syd didn’t get very far before her bff’s boyfriend, who’d showed up late and missed the lovefest, tracked her down in the parking lot, ripped the purse away from her, and screamed something to the effect of “Give me that purse, &#%@face!”
Syd, still thinking the purse was hers, called 911 as the boyfriend went back inside. Confusion and embarrassment ensued. The bff didn’t exactly step to Syd’s defense. You think you know someone just bc you spent 2:34 with them making a fool out of yourself. Anyway, that’s the backstory.
Back to Tues: Artie submits #160 with a caption that reads “Now have No. 3 say ‘Give me that purse “#%$@face!” You’d think the Committee would’ve focused on the f-bomb and raised concerns over the “family brand”, etc. like they did with “Your Little Blue Pill”. But their main concern was that they just didn’t get it. It was a quick 7-2 No vote. But they discussed some alternative captions, and we ran them through the S-MCSS. Someone (me) accidentally included Artie’s original version in the batch. And that version came back with a 21.7, which is the *highest* score we’ve ever had (the other versions. So now the Committee was in a pickle.
The meeting went on for hours. In the end, I think they were still gun shy after the whole Trump hair thing, and they insisted on dropping the last word, so it just reads “Give me your wallet!” despite a S-MCSS score of 7.1. Including the alternative version here so you can make up your own mind.
There is a statement of some sort to be made here. I mean, there are artistic principles at stake. Artie’s contractually prohibited from doing anything with the original submission now. But I sense some tchotchkes coming from Hong Kong. :) -Ed.
