“Could You Just Throw Us the Worms?” 

Artie says this one is layered with meaning. He says it’s a commentary on Man’s eternal struggle with Nature. He said something about Melville and “emotional undercurrents”, and that there’s some kind of religious symbolism with the fish. He emailed the file, and he was on his cell phone from his fishing boat off Orcas Island and it was cutting in and out, so I didn’t catch all of it. But what I did catch was him insisting that there shouldn’t be a caption. “Tell them NO CAPTION,” he kept saying. “It stands on its own!” The Caption Committee disagreed. They said the fish’s mouth is open, and if Artie didn’t want a caption then why did he draw a fish with its mouth open? So after the usual hour of throwing things against the wall, they voted 3-2 on “Could you just throw us the worms?” There were two or three other options, but standing alone wasn’t one of them. Artie is going to go nuts, I think, when he hears about it. -Ed.
