The Week Ahead, 6/2/19

The Week Ahead, 6/2/19

Summer is coming. The cottonwood fell and piled up in the streets like drifting snow, & then the rains came and washed it all away. Now we’re left with 70 degrees & sunshine dancing on Elliott Bay, a light breeze coming in off the water, and a sense that we’ve prevailed once again over the long, wet night and earned the right to wear cargo shorts & flip-flops for the next ninety days or so. I’ve got my dark roast in my Vancouver Aquarium souvenir mug, and I’ve moved the office to the Starbucks on the corner, where they give you a 10 cent discount for bringing your own ceramic. Inky’s on his way over, we’ll earn another twenty cents in discounts, linger over the free WiFi for a while, then head over to Artie & Syd’s. Artie’s getting the boat ready for the season and he’s taking us out to drop spot shrimp traps & talk about the week ahead, which looks like this: another exploration of Artie’s never-ending medical issues, this time projected onto middle-aged dragons; two carbon atoms at a romantic dinner discussing the strength of the attraction between them in terms of the cold, detailed physics behind it; Felix the Double Helix reflecting on just what he’s made of while shaving in a bathroom that looks strikingly similar to Alexander Zebrafeld’s; the world’s greatest matador facing the world’s greatest bull. The last one, an earworm who favors the uncatchy, avant-garde musical experiments of John Cage (most notably his composition called 4’33”, in which the musician does nothing but listen to the sound of the audience for four minutes and thirty-three seconds) was debated all through last week and we have yet to come to a final approved caption, so we’ll see if it runs this week. Hope you’re enjoying your Sunday too...-Ed.
