#193: A Scene From the Spa at the Four Seasons
Artie spent Wed getting a couples massage with Sydney. He used to go for more deep tissue work at a sports therapy clinic, but on Wed they went to the Four Seasons Spa together downtown. They bought 2 of the robes, so they must be pretty nice. He didn’t tell me this- I found an expense report in the copy room. Artie was in the office yesterday, which doesn’t happen much these days, meeting w Accounting. I thought for sure he was getting lectured on his use of the SynrSys corporate Amex card for what are obviously personal expenses. But he was whistling when he left, on hold on his phone, & he gave me a little punch on my shoulder as he went by, practically skipping out to the lobby. HQ has a 3-strike policy on the card, so I guess he still doesn’t have a strike yet, but he did expense the couple’s massage as “research for #193”. It did OK in the focus groups & then flew through the Committee 9-0. Apparently, all of them are familiar w the spa at the Four Seasons bc there were a lot of knowing comments about the nice robes there. Also, Inky hasn’t paid for his own meals in months bc he says he only eats while he’s working. All of this was beginning to make me wonder what I’m missing, then I saw a 2nd expense report for Hanelore’s Munich vacation. I have no idea how she justifies that. Maybe she’ll make video. My card just showed up in the mail, so I’m going to take it out for a spin and see what happens. I’ve been thinking about Artie’s weird rhetorical questions that may not be rhetorical. Why does it take 25 people to put out a single-panel comic every day, when there are kids all over doing it basically solo with a pencil and an iPhone? When Marv was here, there were only 5 of us, all part-time, & he approved the panels personally. Now it takes a Committee of 9 & a focus group of 100 freelancers. It is curious, when you think about it. It’s hard to argue the product is any better. Maybe worse. On the other hand, the benefits have gotten way better.
