Arthur Trope Presents: The Inscrutables

No. 162

“Some of My Best Friends Are Dogs“

I think Artie, in his way, is trying to accommodate his subversive side & at the same time comply with the mandate from the Committee to put more dogs & cats in his submissions. The effect seems to just confuse them, which is fine as far as Artie’s concerned bc they approved this one 6-3 anyway, without much of a debate. The three No votes weren’t holding out over some lingering sensitivity to any message issue, they just didn’t think it was funny. The Yes votes were hungry. The meeting started late at 11:45 and bumped up against lunch, so that probably helped expedite things. They all went out to Barolo after to discuss God knows what, because I still don’t understand what they do the rest of the week. I’ve been thinking lately about Artie’s question about why it takes so many people to put out a single panel comic, when there are kids all over the interwebs doing it basically solo. A 9-person committee of eager beaver recent grads, a paid focus group working on standby, and a full support staff in not-too-shabby downtown office space does seem a little heavy on the overhead. And Artie’s been expensing pretty much his entire existence lately on his corporate Amex and no one seems to mind. The Canlis dinner went through without a peep from Accounting. I’m also starting to wonder if the hack while I was in Cabo wasn’t an inside job. Hanelore in particular seems to be acting a little too normal. I have accounted, I think, for the fact that this might all just be paranoia and hypersensitivity associated with my, um, delicate HR situation. Still. There is a weird vibe I can’t shake. Anyway, here’s #162. I like it. Esp the rambling/defensive/patronizing caption which came back @ 20 even on the S-MCSS. Hope you do to. Inky added color for this one, bc he said it worked better in color, which is true, I think + it scored well in the focus groups on image balance and overall inscrutability. Feel free to read politics into it, it’s already passed the Committee. -Ed.
