#312: "Boston to Montserrat"
Thanksgiving is Thursday and we have much to be thankful for here at Picklefish Comics. We’re still in business, despite discovering that after Marv sold the company to SynrSys, Inc., we were never anything more than a front for our new parent company’s global money-laundering operation. The Feds could’ve frozen all of our assets and taken back all of the questionable purchases made on the corporate Amex this year. But Edith Fickle-Pisch, Marv’s widow, who’s one tough negotiator, owned 49% of Picklefish LLC, & was granted full control in the aftermath of the FBI raid and somehow negotiated for Artie to keep his boat, and Inky to keep the 20% down payment on his house in Green Lake, and Jenny to keep her wine cellar. And I guess I get to keep the one lunch we ate where we didn’t talk a word of shop. Maybe I should’ve been more aggressive with that card. Anyway, it makes it hard to complain that we have to move out of our plush 30th floor downtown office space and find lower-rent digs outside the city. But we don’t have the kind of cash flow anymore that smuggling drugs out of Eastern Europe through Iceland in Alexander Zebrafeld plush dolls used to afford. Edith has her eye on some mixed-use industrial property near the airport, which is going to feel like a real step down when I don’t have my panoramic skyline views anymore. I’ll be sipping my Saturday morning dark roast under the approach pattern at SeaTac and staring out the window at the FedEx loading dock across the way. But the paychecks keep coming through! So we get to keep doing what we love to do. And for that we’re all very thankful. -Ed.
