#318: Turtles All the Way Up
Artie’s decided to throw in the towel on his presidential campaign. He only stayed in the race this long for the chance at the VP offer. He & Syd disagree over who to endorse. Artie’s prepared to push his supporters to Harris, but Syd’s already looking into canvassing for Klobuchar. I doubt there’s a VP offer in the cards from either, though. Artie’s message never broke through, I guess. It never broke through with me anyway, because I can’t even remember the campaign slogan. But they did have some well-designed posters, which Inky helped out with. And a nice event at Roxbury Lanes bowling alley, where Jenny from Ad Sales bowled a 210. Anyway, #318 rated fairly high on inscrutability in the new focus groups results. The consensus was it was a nod, somehow, to the mythological idea of the World Turtle, or the World Elephant in Hindu cosmology, but things got a little muddy after that. But it seems pretty clear to me. I see it in the context of Artie’s worldview colliding with his concession that he isn’t the one that’s going to solve all the world’s problems. He & Syd are still going to focus on the ones where they can have an impact, though. He’s donating what’s left of his campaign war chest, enough to buy a few holiday meals, to the Mary’s Place homeless shelter in Seattle. Artie won’t be making a public statement about his exit from the race. He just asks that, in lieu of donating to his inaugural committee, you take a few minutes over the holidays and think about where you might be able to do a little more for the world. It can use the help. -Ed.
